When should I schedule my child’s first visit to the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend scheduling a child’s first dental exam 6 months after the first tooth erupts and no later than the first birthday. Expect your baby’s teeth and gums to be examined at baby check ups.

What to expect when you go to the dentist

Infant and toddlers will receive a knee to knee exam. We will talk with the parent, assess the child’s caries risk and talk about when and how to brush.

During a dental exam for older children, the dentist will:

  • Evaluate your child’s overall oral hygiene
  • Evaluate the risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Check for bite problems
  • Remove stains or deposits on teeth
  • Demonstrate proper brushing technique
  • Take dental X-rays if indicated
  • Develop a comprehensive treatment plan

Using kid-friendly language

It is important to understand that clinical settings can be intimidating, especially for kids. We can minimize this anxiety by using words and phrases that create less stress.

Rest assured we will talk with your child and explain everything in kid-friendly terms so they know just what to expect.
